Programme notes: SAFETY ROLLS AND SAFETY FALLS Recently in Auckland, a child fell out of a shopping trolley onto concrete – onlookers were horrified and expected the worst. But then they were amazed as the child tucked into a safety roll and emerged unharmed. The mother gave him a hug and exclaimed ‘don’t worry he’s a Jumping Beans baby’! Falling is the number one cause of hospitalisation for children under the age of 5. Luckily there are some practical safety skills that children can learn to help prevent these accidents. At Jumping Beans we teach children to land on two feet, this trains their legs to absorb the shock of the landing. But what is the child is falling head first? This is when we need to use the ‘safety roll’. Safety Roll The concept of the Safety Roll is derived from techniques in martial arts such as Judo and Aikido. In these disciplines contestants learn to fall into a shoulder roll and recover quickly onto their feet. At Jumping Beans we know that mastering a physical skill takes repetition. This literally grows the brain connections that make the safety roll an automatic reflex to falling. We also insist that all rolling and falling exercises are repeated on both sides so that the brain development and reflex reaction is even in both directions. If a child is favouring one side then we can encourage more repetitions to correct the imbalance. When children practice their safety rolls at first they tend to be stiff and inflexible. As they practice they learn to relax and therefore avoid more injury. And as they tumble down foam stairs and slopes and roll over cylinders – they have fun!
